Tomato Season......

Tomato canning season is officially here. This is the biggest job of the year in terms of canning/gardening. We had our first 1 1/2 bushels of Amish paste ready to go, so the girls (and grandbabies) came over yesterday and away we went.

Sam loved turning the handle, for about 3o seconds, then he was off to other important things.

The result was 17 1/2 quarts of delicious tomato sauce. Only about another 100 quarts to go! It is worth all the work, you can't beat the taste and we like knowing what's in our food.

Of course, some of us just laid around all day, snug and cozy :)

Knitting is big these days as well. Hats and mitts for the little ones.
I am using the patterns from this book and am quite enjoying myself. The author has a website here. She does offer a few of her patterns free on her website.
The weather has turned suddenly chilly. Very Autumn-like, and a nice change, I must say. This summer was the nicest summer in my memory. The days were sunny, and hot, but without the humidity we usually suffer from (at least most days). It was very dry, particularly August, but other than that it was pretty much perfect, weather-wise.

I am working on my fall schedule. My ambitious plans (well ambitious for me, since I am such a homebody) include Aquafit, a knitting class, weekly bible study group, and maybe, if I like it, Tai Chi! I have wanted to try Tai Chi for years, and I'm going to check out the beginner class this afternoon and see how it goes, and hope I don't fall on my...ahem....!

I would also like to have some young mums over for a crochet class, granny squares I think. Perhaps a Saturday afternoon, when little ones can be left home with Daddy. There has been some interest expressed and I would love to do it, so we will see what can be worked out.

This weekend we have grandsons for a sleepover! We should have a wonderful time, the weather looks great so lots of outside play, and a nap for me Sunday afternoon, once they've gone home :-)

Have a wonderful rest of the week,
Niki

Hmmm, all those bottles of beautiful red sauce look amazing! I'm glad that you had some help. Glad that Grandpa was around to help tend the grands, too, as if they needed a lot of tending. Love seeing the sleeping one all cuddled up in a sweet blankie. What fun for the young gals to learn granny squares and afghan making on a Saturday afternoon to be followed by tea and delights, too, I'm sure!

I may have to ask for your recipe! I planted 11 tomato plants - I don't what I was thinking!! They're loaded although not red yet.

Our summer was not so perfect - but just around our wedding time it turned and it's been nice since. Thank You Lord! I would have felt sad if I didn't get a few beach days in! Not to mention some warmth for garden growth.

I'm hoping to do some knitting this winter - a knitting friend moved home and she's going to give me some pointers!

Your fall schedule sounds fun!

Many hands - make little work. I love how your family works together....that's one of the many things I enjoy about farming with our kids. Even the grandkids have a role to play, however small it might be!

That is just too too amazing! How wonderful to have all that special tomato paste to look forward to over the winter... with no chemical preservatives!!!

How lucky to have your grandkids around. I love the adorable photo of Sam laughing as he turned the handle.

Yes, Coronation Street is on every day for an hour at 6:30pm on CBC.

I love the glimpse of your house! I love the floors, the openness, the feeling of serenity. A great place! Not to mention the tomatoes!! I have become a tomato eater-in-summer rather than freezer-for-winter.

Hi Niki,
The sauce looks great. My new goal is a yoga class...I'd like to stretch and get a little stronger. Did you make the sweet baby afghan?

Love,
Amy

Oh!!! A local crochet class?? Where do I sign up?!

Love the picture of all of the bottles of tomato sauce - what an accomplishment. Learning to can is another thing on my must-learn list!

Blessings,
